hey, you always said you liked ’em pretty
and fun too, can’t forget that either,
your own jester in a polyester suit —
the coat of many colors to mask
this beating heart of mine

thought you’d like to know
that I’m doing fine, just swell,
even without your charismatic sheen
that brought all the girls to their knees
(and even a few of the boys too)

you’d never think it, would you,
that someone could move on
from your pleasant little wonderland —
but the Cheshire cat’s gone astray
while Alice is missing in action

say, do you think it might have been different
if I had been the one to laugh at all your jokes
instead of the one who tightened like a bud
shying away from the warm light of spring,
still caught in a winter of betrayal

thought you’d like to know
I’m still lost in the idea of you
even though the real deal left me cold —
the promise of this small love affair
disappearing like…
