Garden of Roses in Full Bloom
#100StoryChallenge — No46
There once was a girl growing in the patch of roses outside Grandma’s back door.
“Oh, leave her,” Grandma chided me while I stared at the girl’s perfect face surrounded by thorny vines. “She’s a spot of good luck. She scares off the rabbits from eating my vegetables.”
“Is she a real girl?” I asked.
Grandma shrugged. “Hard to say. She could be a fairy child for all I know. But it doesn’t matter. She’s here, so she stays.”
My grandmother knew how to strip a magical situation down to its bare bones.
Maybe that’s why I’m a witch today.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
