Funeral March

100 Faces in 100 Stories — No55

--

Lady Svetlana didn’t shed a tear as her husband’s body was lowered into the grave. Only when the coffin hit the bottom with a soft thud did she look up and take a shaky breath.

When she turned to look at me, there wasn’t a trace of sadness on her face. “Shall we go, Alexei?”

“Yes, my lady,” I said as I took her arm in the crook of mine.

“It’s ironic. He would have hated it all. But I feel peace.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, Alexei, though I think my husband’s ghost will haunt me for all of time.”
