Freeze Out
A Poem
i foresaw the end from the beginning,
but i couldn’t help charting the stars above
in some vain attempt of keeping you close.
but you gave me your every cold shoulder,
pushed me away when it mattered most,
and told me in silence not to get my hopes up.
yet
it was too late, it was too late
because you were like a neon sign
catching hold of my attention.
i couldn’t look away, i couldn’t look away
as if i were mesmerized by your every move —
a beacon under the expanse of a midnight sky.
and i —
i knew the road you would take
before you’d even made the choice
because i could feel the frost creeping in.
your eyes had once looked my way,
but one day they just turned cold
as if the light inside had blinked out.
oh —
it was the freeze out, the freeze out —
what i’d feared, what i knew
as soon as you turned away.
