A Poem

i’m a dreamer, it’s true:
no one can take that away from me,
and it’s been the one thing
to accompany me through thick and thin.

but there are moments
to make me wonder where dreams end
and real life begins —
especially since i met you once upon a moon.

you were the sunshine
while i was a winter sky with a chance of storms —
and i may have thought
you could be the one to melt away all my ice.

silly, perhaps, to think
someone might have the rare ability
to save you from yourself —
but i’d fallen hard before and knew the stakes.

the truth is i could have seen
where all of this would go — from coffee to flirting,
from laughter to kissing,
and from inside jokes to falling in love.

maybe i should have warned myself
that you could be my whole undoing in one motion,
but i couldn’t help the fascination
that tied my heart to yours from across the distance.
