Fools in Love

A Poem

speak your lies, if you must,
and I’ll try not to hear you
because the truth bleeds
between the lines,
throbbing
like an open wound

everyone told me to get away,
save myself before it was too late,
but I never heeded the warning
because you were
everything
I thought I needed

so I stamped down my pride
and cut off my sanity
because I thought
you were magic,
effervescent,
never to be found again

but you stole away,
hid in the shadows
of my darkest nights
till you were the bruise,
pulsing,
a map on my skin

maybe I’d listen better
if they hadn’t taught me
to hang onto the words
of a man who proved
love
was his only saving grace
