Fleeting Wishes
A Poem
i tell myself every time
that i’ll never desire
what i can’t have
but you —
you were always the exception,
the counter point to all my rules
late at night,
with all my ghosts,
i imagined you there
all that dandelion fluff
fluttering in the wind —
all of it was for you
but then i saw you
at the bar,
standing with her
and i ached
as if my heart
had become a bruise
and i wondered why
i couldn’t help wanting
a person destined for someone else
because i could see it,
plain as day,
you two were meant to be
still —
i took to my pages
and made us a story
it wasn’t a tale of romance
or even one of daring heists —
but just a world where we could coexist
