First Impressions

The court had never before held a courtship ball for its young princesses. Alana, Justina, and Tatiana stared out into the crowd of strangers and felt their stomachs twist with anxiety.
Their governess, a young woman of age twenty, joined a man in a dance. The three princesses watched in awe as the two twirled as if in a world all their own.
“She looks so beautiful,” Tatiana said longingly.
Justina scoffed. “He’s not even handsome enough for her.”
“I just wish I could dance too,” murmured Alana.
Three princesses, alike in dignity — yet moons apart as far as intent.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
