Fare Thee Well
A Poem
fare thee well
we always say on a long journey
meant to prelude the whole of an adventure,
and we imagine
what stories we’ll tell along the way
in the thick of our most ardent moments
fare thee well —
those were the words I said to you
before you departed my life as if you were
just a ghost
who was meant to haunt for a time
but never destined to last forever and ever
fare thee well —
those were the words I wanted you to say
before it was too late, before the end began —
but you were
the sinner, the scarlet letter, the devil’s mark
and I had no idea until you had already gone
fare thee well,
for you were the love I wanted to keep
even when the pain felt like I were dying,
and I tried
to lose sight of you while in the haze of other arms
but you seem to be more unforgettable than I planned
