Fairy Crowns
#100StoryChallenge — No27
The fairy queen rarely gave out the crowns she herself wove. It was the highest honor if you were to receive a flower crown crafted from her steady hands.
On the night of the summer solstice, only one of the queen’s handmaidens would receive a highly sought-after crown.
With reverence, the handmaiden knelt before the queen’s throne.
The queen placed the piece atop the other fairy’s head.
But something strange happened.
The vines of the crown snaked down to wrap around the handmaiden’s throat.
As the vines choked the handmaiden, the queen just smiled.
“I will not tolerate betrayal.”
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
