100 Faces in 100 Stories — No3

--

I thought I knew my worth the moment you chose me.

Your scaly hands closed around my cheeks, cradling me in their slick chill. Your face was inhuman and wrong, yet I didn’t feel fear. Instead, I felt the burn of curiosity course through me.

“What say you?” the Kraken King asked. “Will you be my bride?”

Another maiden might have fainted right then and there.

Instead, I stood strong and smiled.

“What other option do I have?”

But you heard the sarcasm in my voice. The quick response seemed to amuse you.

Then you pulled me beneath the waves.
