A Poem

dear Eliza,

where has the time flown

that you’re like a lark

escaping its gilded cage?

you went to the countryside

and I’ve heard nothing from you.

I miss you so.

dear Eliza,

your smile soothed me

when nothing else worked —

did you ever realize?

you never answered my last letter,

and I’ve been patiently waiting.

I miss you so.

dear Eliza,

summer has parted ways

as winter begins to awaken —

did you enjoy the sun?

you left in early April, I believe,

and I still have no response from you.

I miss you so.

dear Eliza,

please put these passions to rest,

I beg of you now —

don’t you see how you torture me?

your mother is no help,

and your sister tells me to give up.

I miss you so.
