Dream Girl
A Poem
cupid’s bow lips, cheshire smile —
oh, she’s a lovely one, isn’t she?
it’s no wonder, no wonder,
why you fell in love with her.
i can picture her sitting in your car
as you thread your fingers through hers
and you both share knowing looks
before you drive on to happily ever after.
i can see it so clearly that it must be true
because that kind of life suits you well
and you deserve nothing but the best
in a world that takes so much so fast.
and i made my peace that i’ll never be
the dream girl you see behind your lids
when sleep begins to pull you under,
when you’re able to shed life’s burdens.
soft pillow talk, heavy kisses —
oh, she’s the one you craved, isn’t she?
you put your ring on her finger,
and it’s an unconditional bond.
i can imagine you caressing her head
when you coax her from another nightmare
and she smiles in her slumber just once
in a way that makes your heart soar.
