Down the Streets We Once Roamed

A Poem

do you remember those long-ago days
when you held my hand as if you’d keep it
in your grasp for as long as time went on and on?

do you remember how i leaned in close
and caught your mouth in a timeless kiss
before the moment was snatched away forever?

oh, i thought you were my everything,
but maybe i got confused along the way.

down the streets we once roamed —
i still take each step in time, in tune, intact,
as if somehow that’ll bring you back
when you were never any guarantee.

do you remember those faraway jaunts
when we’d adventure through this old city
and take our prizes as they came by and by and by?

do you remember how i brought you near
as if i could keep hold of you, no regrets,
when you weren’t mine to want or crave or claim?

oh, i thought you were a soul to keep,
but my hands came up empty.
