Double Life

A Poem

how you make me want to weep —
when there’s nothing to be done for it,
when i can’t name anything —
even as everything makes me so very

undone

and the unraveling
happens slowly —
so slowly —
as the pittance crumbles

a pittance for many,
a hope for some,
a dream in the distance —
days upon days upon days

lost, lost, lost

and in the fraction of a moment
there are times where we could undo it all —
take the tide, have the measure, know the scope —
even as a heartbreak tide keeps going

(even as a heartbreak tide keeps going)

and i know the will of ways,
a spring of kings,
a hopeful measure
of some happenstance

all these things i’ve done —
has been for the future

all these things i’ve done —
has been for a better life

all these things i’ve done —
has been to show you

that you’ll be better off this way
