Diamond Tears

I was quick to cry. Everyone teased me for it, especially back in school, so I learned to duck out of a room if the waterworks came upon me.

But it was unavoidable at work when I stood behind a cash register every shift. Sometimes a customer would snap at me over a missed discount, and then my eyes would tear up.

It wouldn’t have been a problem if I were normal.

But every tear fell as a small diamond. Most people didn’t notice — they were too caught up in themselves — but I knew.

Who would make me a commodity?
