My sister Ellie was never the same after our father died. She walked through life almost like a ghost, her brunette hair running pale with streaks of silver long before her time.
I tried to do what I could to soothe her. I gave her balms and herbs and fragrant teas. I whispered prayers in her name to the Old Gods of the earth.
But, day by day, her presence grew more and more faint.
“Why, Elda?” she asked me one moonlit night. “Why did you kill Papa?”
And I never could say the words.
Because he hurt you first.
