Dancing Girls

A Poem

pixie light and glitter dust,
neon callings to write the wrongs
as we twirl in flight patterns in the field

everyone thought we were a duo
who wouldn’t be parted for anything
but we proved them wrong, didn’t we, babe

that first night felt like years
where we learned each other’s kiss
and sunk into a routine we might repeat

but every moment after felt like a lie
where I didn’t know a thing about you at all
as if you’d done a heist on my heart

our last dance felt like we had our hands tied,
double-knotted for good measure,
and each touch would leave a burn scar

footsteps tangled in wayward paths —
we had no idea where we were going
because we were still so lost in each other

dancing girls, they might have called us,
but the whimsy was gone and love was too —
because we were partners from another age

everyone thought we’d last forever
but, hey, we broke that streak, didn’t we…
