100 Faces in 100 Stories — No21

--

The man called me El when I awoke the first time, but I had no memory of the name or the body I found myself in. A metallic hand rose up in the stark white light of the hospital room; it took me a moment to realize that the hand was my own.

“It’ll take time to adjust,” he said. “But believe me when I say we made the right decision for you.”

Sensors in my brain — another surprise — told me my temperature was rising, my heart pounding in my ears.

“No,” I said.

That was all I could manage.
