A Poem

tell me your secrets
in the moments
between today
and the drudge
of tomorrow

but you’ll soon
go on your way
and leave me
behind
once again

should I be
surprised
at all?

you kept me
far away,
always
at a distance,
no room for us

your promises
of yesterday
fell too short,
never giving me
what I needed most

should we
have even tried
to make it work?

maybe tell me your lies
that they might save
what’s sinking below
the depths, so shallow,
of what we once were

but you’ll soon
say it’ll never be —
this lost love affair,
a candle that never
should have been allowed to burn
