A Poem

you might think me strange indeed
for being the benefactor
of three far different felines,
all who keep to themselves
unless they want a treat or two

it all started with a stray,
a striped orange suitor
who came out of the bushes
to stand on the concrete steps
and meow his plea of help

he became a prince in no time at all,
leisurely roaming his kingdom
and acting as the final authority
over what came into his domain
and what would leave in peace

but he’s been gone three long years —
the end of an era, for sure —
and he died in peace and slumber
like the lion-heart he was,
off to kitty Avalon in his dreams

then there was the charmed girl,
the calico princess in her petite frame —
but looks can be quite deceiving
because she’ll only utter a sound
when she wants a morsel of food
