The day the bullies at school pushed Halley into the mud was the final straw.
Gina, the ringleader, laughed as if she had never seen anything funnier. “You’re right where you belong!”
The other girls tittered before they scattered, departing before any teachers could get wind of the situation.
Halley collected her dirt-stained books and slowly got to her feet.
Tears didn’t fall.
But her fingertips flickered with sparks.
That night, Gina’s house went up in flames. Everyone called it a freak accident, a tragedy, the loss of life far too soon.
But Halley? She just smiled.
Good riddance.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
