In the days leading up to winter break, Amy didn’t know how long she could stand hearing her roommate Cara blast Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat. The problem was exacerbated, Amy supposed, because Cara’s boyfriend Jake had just made the executive decision that the relationship between them was on a break until further notice.

Obviously, there was not enough Rocky Road ice cream in the world for Cara to ingest, but it definitely wasn’t helping that she was listening to a playlist of Christmas songs all meant to inspire longing for companionship and romance around the holidays.

“You’re really not going home for Christmas?” Amy asked Cara the week classes were set to end. “You’re just going to stay in the dorm all over break?”

“I just don’t feel very festive,” Cara replied. “And my parents are going to the Bahamas for the holidays. Not much point in going home just to be all alone there too.”

Amy thought about listing pro’s and con’s to the situation — but what good would that do? Cara was obviously still hurting over the vague break-up she had experienced. What could a simple act from a sorta-kinda-friend-slash-roommate do?
