Choosing Me Isn’t the Answer

A Poem

i loved the basket,
but i think it came
too little too late

you expect me to be flattered
with gifts strewn like toys
given to a mere child

you ignore me,
yet you expect me
to choose you

you ignore me,
yet you expect me
to placate you

you called me gorgeous
once upon a time ago,
and i blushed from it all

but my dusty rose dress
wasn’t made for dancing —
and you never asked anyway

you don’t see me,
you don’t see me —
you just see what you want

what do you expect from me?
you don’t see me as a star at this party,
and i’m losing myself in pages upon pages

just to get away from you,
just to get away from you,
and go into a daydream’s arms
