The gods cursed Cassandra Rose before she was ever really born.

Born — meaning that she had other lives prior to this one. Born — meaning she had nothing but a string of failures until this lifetime, the final lifetime, before the world blinked out of being.

Because Cassandra Rose saw the end of the world as soon as she became a young woman. When she closed her eyes at night, she saw how it would begin: with a gunshot splitting the air, with air raid sirens piercing through screams, with bomb blasts leveling a city that had once been a beacon among beacons.

But the end of the world came in fragments — and, even without being told a thing, she knew that she would never be believed. Her mother had chosen the name Cassandra out of fate more than anything else, she supposed, rather than an erring inclination towards the moniker itself. The origin of the name, of course, was not lost on Cassandra Rose: the Cassandra of myth had been doomed to see visions of the future but, when she tried to warn anyone, she would not be heeded.

It was in this way that Cassandra Rose went through the first twenty years of her life, flying under the radar even as — at night — her visions grew more erratic and unwieldy.
