I knew when the first snowflakes began to fall that you weren’t going to show up for our date. Looking up at the white sky, I felt so small and insignificant. But I tried to shake it off as I braced myself against the cold.

What had I expected? You had said yes on a whim — probably as a lark to tell all your friends.

Mom said I always knew how to pick the ones who would treat me the worst.

It was a curse.

And not just by word alone.

No man would ever fall in love with me.
