Falling in love wasn’t on the agenda, yet we had come almost full-circle. Six months in, two fights, one week where we took a break apart. But we were still standing across from each other as if we found value beyond all the flaws between the both of us.

You thought it would be cute to ask me if we should move in together. I rolled my eyes, already knowing your bluff, but it made my heart pound that you almost sounded serious. A more gullible woman would have fallen for the enticing prize dangled in front of her. But I knew better. You weren’t the first to knock on the door to my heart.

But things weren’t all roses without thorns. You didn’t like my shopping habits — “Amazon doesn’t need to be personally funded by you, Lane” — and I hated that you didn’t wear a head-set to block out the noise when you were gaming back at your apartment. In the grand scheme of everything, however, those quibbles were small.

In the bedroom, however, that was a different story.

You were the awkward type, always asking for permission before you did anything. While I appreciated the concern — and the dedication to consent — a part of me longed for a little bit more assertiveness. There were only so many times I could fake getting excited, only to go hide in the bathroom afterward…
