There were worse things than breaking up with a mermaid, Gareth was learning.

It wasn’t a matter of a sea witch’s spell or an edict from the king of the seven seas. No one seemed to care that Gareth was an ex-fisherman whose livelihood had been dependent upon the very waves that had fostered the love of his life.

But all things must end. He found Astara perched on her rock one morning in the sunlight, the rays glinting off her magnificent tail.

“I fear I must leave you,” she said.

He didn’t have to ask what she meant.

This is my third take on the 100 Story Challenge! Lyrics define these stories, and this piece‘s title was inspired by “She’s American” from The 1975.
