A Poem

oh, boys don’t think at all
when they’re out on the town,
tipsy from one underage drink
as they search for something,
they just don’t know what.

a cute smile, a knowing look —
these are the things of madness
waiting to unravel the teenage psyche
till there’s nothing but a whirlwind
of raging hormones triumphing.

maybe they’ll take in that pretty face,
someone with a grin so sugar sweet
that nothing else seems to matter
in the spotlight of her, her, her —
that girl who comes to matter most.

oh, they say boys don’t care at all
as if their minds are all on one thing —
but have you ever seen one so captivated
that he looks like he might cry a few tears
just to release the overload of emotion he feels?

a movie date, a lovely time —
these are the things of sweetness
that’ll never come back once you’re old,
and someday soon he might just tell her
he has a ring just for her and her alone.
