a poet
never realizes her secrets,
and she falters in the face of nothing —
or so the story goes if it’s unwound the right way.

a poet
has a code, you see —
if the muses are displayed just so,
never abused or burdened in silent measures.

a poet
is no snow white, it’s true —
but she has her seven muses (or more, perhaps)
as long as she’s willing to pay her tithes to them.

a poet
keeps her oaths to her pen,
no matter the cost,
even as life toils against her every day.

a poet
may dance with fairy tales,
and she may even fancy them —
but once upon a time is not forever.

a poet
can have only so many options
before she has to decide
where her pen, her sword, will fall.

a poet
can pretend she doesn’t know
what damage she’s doing —
but she can’t hide behind…
