Hazel and Fatima had been Alanna’s go-to gal pals in the days before Alanna had split from the coven. Although most witches had turned their backs on her, both women had stayed by Alanna’s side as she adjusted to being a witch with no official backing from the nearest chapter of the Northeast Sisterhood.

“It’ll be fine,” Hazel said that first week after Alanna had her witchbrand removed by a fairy tattoo artist. “You’re the strongest person I know, Allie. If you can’t make a life without the coven work, then I don’t know how anyone could.”

“Way to give her a complex,” Fatima had murmured as she practiced making a lily bloom out of nothing more than a clear bowl of water. Her legs were crossed, her leggings rolled up to reveal the intricate tattoos lacing up her toned calves. “You know how Allie is. She’ll start doubting herself as soon as anyone shows a shred of confidence in her.”

“Hey! Unfair!” Alanna exclaimed, but her two friends laughed as if their humor was on cue. “I’ll have you know that I’m perfectly fine. I have my game plan, and I have six months’ worth of savings from that part-time gig at the library. It’s enough of a start, don’t you think?”
