Back to Hello

A Poem

you know it’s past the time
when we should have aired
every grievance we had —
every little poison,
every vindictive slip —
since we’re not getting anywhere
while we circle each other
like predators in the wild

oh, you can be king of the jungle
if that’s what’ll make you happy —
but I’m done trying to pretend
this war will have any winners

you know it’s past the time
where we should have forgiven —
and tried to forget —
but we’re still hanging off ledges
as we seek some form
of pure absolution
in any form we can find,
this drug of a modern age

oh, you can be that great power
if you think you’re worthy
while you’re sipping champagne
as if there’s no end to tomorrow

you know you can’t fake it —
not with me —
so you want to obliterate it all
and scorch it from your history
until the day we meet as strangers,
forced to say hello again
as if the goodbyes didn’t change us
for better and for worse

oh, you can’t lie to me, honey —
not after all this time —
but you’re not one for apologizing
or admitting you where wrong

so it’s back to hello,
oh, oh, oh
so it’s back to hello,
oh, oh, oh —
and we can’t even meet
somewhere in the middle
because it’s too late
oh, honey, it’s too late
