A Poem

call me the drama queen
if it’ll please you
because you know I crave
that spotlight like I was born with it

but there’s no turning back
when the light catches you in its grasp

you know that better than anyone

maybe I’ll know where I stand
by that catch of morning sun
that’s so much warmer
than the limelight could ever be

but I made my choices
as soon as I was old enough to make them

you saw what happened in the aftermath

so often I sat by the ocean
and tried to pretend the waves
lightly crashing against the shore
were strains of applause only for me

but it was just another delusion
of all those great heights I’d never reach

you told me I was worth it, but I never believed you

and now I’m waiting on fame
as if all those eyes will save me
from the disaster of myself
even though I’m already drowning
