At the Feet of Your Altar

A Poem

heaven help me —
I didn’t pray hard enough
and now I’m just a lost soul,
too old to be led like a sheep
but too young to remember my sins.

here I kneel under your colors,
those shades of rainbow promises
even though I’ve read the tomes
one too many times,
waiting on your grace.

and tomorrow may condemn me
when I forget the words again,
no longer blessed
with divine epiphany
like all those who came before.

oh, do you dare look me in the eye?
or am I just your lost cause,
hoping for absolution
but just seeing wreckage
of all those past mistakes?

maybe I won’t sing your psalms
or dance away from the devil’s smile —
but is your mercy all I need
in a world that still spins
while welcoming all chaos?
