At the Feet of the Goddess

The altar was cold stone against his skin. His breathing halted in soft bursts, as if he were afraid to catch any notice, but what did it matter?
They had already tied him down to be sacrificed to the goddess.
“You’ll be honored above all other men,” the elders told him. “Who wouldn’t want that kind of legacy?”
But he didn’t want to die in her name, no matter how blasphemous they would have claimed he was.
He wanted a family. He wanted years ahead to thrive. He wanted to live.
But in this land, the goddess ruled above all.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
