Another Season Passes Us By, And I’m Left Missing You

A Poem

you were the glare of summer
when the sunlight hits just right
and there’s nothing more than nights
spent under the blanket of a bedazzled sky

and we were going so fast, oh, we had no idea
there was any danger of crashing and burning

you were that first hit of lemonade
from the chilled pitcher on the counter,
and your lips were sour-sweet, magnificent,
as we spoke with a language only we knew

and we were tumbling, oh, down the rabbit hole
of daydreams that wouldn’t quit as we chased the high

you were the tender pain of a sunburn
when we had our first fight — explosive —
and you wouldn’t stop running away
no matter how much I cried for you to wait

and we were losing ourselves, oh, inch by inch
down a misty road with no sign of an end in sight

but now it’s autumn
and you’re gone
yet I don’t feel free
