When Hadrian Rex invited me back to his hotel room, I didn’t know quite what to say. His eyes were sincere as he watched me, quiet, until I had to look down at my hands just to get away from the searching way his gaze attempted to probe mine. I knew what probably lay in his phone — pictures upon pictures of girls, all collected from years of boredom — but I tried not to feel too bothered by the idea of such a thing. What right did I have to say anything about that when we had only just met on this passing glimpse of an evening?

“Don’t look so enthusiastic,” he said, drawing back a little, and I could immediately tell I’d hurt his feelings. Even though we were in the back of the hotel bar area, I still recognized that we were on full display to anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention to us. The bartender, the waiters for the restaurant portion, even the concierge at the front desk — all of them were what felt like a breath away as I considered my options. In a quiet world, I would have nothing to lose. In a kind world, no one would bat an eye that a young man and a young woman were stealing away to spend some time together in a darkened room.

But we didn’t live in such times. I knew Hadrian was more than his music, and a part of me was fearful to know the man behind the persona, the…
