“If you could change anything at all,” she said, her voice a whisper, “what would you do?”
“I would challenge Death to a duel and win so that he could never take a soul again.”
She laughed. His mouth twitched because her laugh was more noise than music — but it was charming nonetheless.
“Do you always give such serious answers?” she asked.
“I thought it was a serious question,” he said.
“It was, but…” She twirled a lock of her hair around her finger as she thought. “Most people would have shied away and given a flippant answer. But you didn’t.”
“I wouldn’t. Changing the world…it’s something I think about all the time.” Then he smiled, realizing how ridiculous he sounded. “Even though I can’t do much at all to change anything.”
“But you can.” Her eyes gleamed like stars in the darkness. “You already have the seed inside you, you know.”
“Seed?” His smile grew teasing.
But her face stayed serious. “I’m not joking.”
He drew back, his smile shifting to a frown. “Okay. No joke.”
“No joke,” she agreed. Then she cocked her head. “You’re very self-deprecating.”
