All the Good Endings Are Gone

A Poem

the skies bled their poisons
as we sang our pleas
to gods that weren’t listening,
but the worst were our fellow men
who turned their heads away
as if there was shame in pain.

the earth collapsed in pieces,
and we buckled beneath
the truth of what we wrought
by treating our forests
like they were ex-lovers
that no longer deserved our care.

the people went to the streets,
feet to pavement night after night,
yet they never saw a rise in peace —
just more panic and fear like a tide
that couldn’t be erased, tamed,
or cleaved from the root.

the men with all the riches
hid behind words on a screen
while the world began to scream,
but no amount of money could
derive a better ending, right?
(or so they said.)
