For Part One:

I came to get revenge, but I end up staying for the house that seems stolen straight out of a Christmas storybook.

When Adam leads me into his family’s lake house, I can’t help the sense of awe I feel upon seeing the high ceiling festooned with fairy lights and garland, leading down to the centerpiece of a tree that wouldn’t have even fit inside my old childhood bedroom. And that isn’t even the only decorated tree in the house.

I expect Adam to say something suave, but instead he looks almost embarrassed by the house’s opulence. “Sorry,” he says. “My parents like to go overboard for the holidays.”

“I think it’s beautiful,” I say, surprising myself with how I actually mean the words.

Adam straightens his posture as if my assessment has eased his mind in some way.

“Do you want some wine?” he asks, gesturing to the kitchen and a well-stocked liquor…
