what can I say
that hasn’t already
been said?

you’re the golden girl
on her golden night
while the stars burn
like little fires bright
in your beloved’s eyes

what can I do
to show you
your own grace?

you were the giver
far more than
you ever were the taker,
and I envied you
and your sweetness

what can I say
that will tell you
how much you’re loved?

you danced through life,
always making a game
of the way things were
and how you wished they’d be —
all pennies in the fountain

what can I do
to let you know
you were the sun?

but I’m not here
to list out everything
in bullet points of noise
while the crowd
gets restless
