“It took you long enough,” Malachi said conversationally as he watched Amara put on her black gloves. Her gaze was tempered as if she had been crying earlier in the day.
“Yes, I’ve been out of commission far too long,” she admitted. “But it’s time to take down names.”
Malachi nodded. “There’s a reason you’re the best,” he said. “Everyone’s been waiting for you to wake up.”
“Yes, well, there are people that need saving,” Amara murmured.
“You can’t save everyone,” Malachi said, handing her the sheathed sword that had been locked away for a hundred years. “But you’re hell-bent on saving that girl’s soul, aren’t you?”
“She’s not a bad person,” Amara said. “She’s actually just like me. She longs to belong. In another life, we would have been best friends. I just would hate to see someone come along and take out her spark.”
Malachi nodded. “So who’s target number one?”
“Oh, Mal, you know I don’t share secrets like that,” Amara said, offering a cheeky grin that made Malachi smile in response as if the two of them were mirrors of each other. “But she will be saved. She won’t be exploited any longer.”
