A Song For the Lonely

A Poem

pastel promises
were the stuff of your dreams,
anything to make me cooperate
with your mixed agendas
as I slowly lost myself
to darker horizons.

love letters
scattered to the wind
on the day you left me behind,
off to better pastures somewhere
out there in the great wide world
where I couldn’t hope to follow.

this song
is all I have left of yesterday,
the strands of you I couldn’t untangle
because all your knots were challenges
to my sanity, my well-being, my worth —
all those things you always tried to deny me.

and tomorrow
is another day — I know, I know —
but I can’t help but hope in bursts
that someday you might come back
to darken my door and invite me
on your next grand adventure.

these words
stay buried in my mind
because I’m too afraid to share
and see the expressions on the faces…
