Is there a way to keep a good thing from breaking?
“Don’t do this to me,” Trent said as Lila began collecting her things from around his apartment. She didn’t even spare him a glance as she took book after book from the shelves that had been theirs for six months — six glorious months that he thought could spell an eternity — but of course he had screwed things up again the last time he got drunk. “Come on, Lila, be serious. Where are you going to go?”
“I’m going to Stacy’s,” she said, her voice curt. “She said I could crash at her place for a bit. Then I’m going back home. My dad said my bedroom’s just the way I left it.”
“Lila, you can’t do this — ”
She turned on her heel and jabbed a finger into his chest. “You know what? You should have thought about that before you went out partying with your friends. You don’t know how worried I was when you didn’t come home. You didn’t answer your cell, your friends wouldn’t return my calls, and you didn’t have the decency to apologize. Do you know how much that hurts? That you disregard me at every turn? I feel like I’m living with a damn ghost!”
