A Poem

oh, time rebounded
against me, against me, against me
on this fickle night of the soul,
and i had no idea what you were to me
because i’d lost you once upon too many times before.

oh, fate is not kind,
and i’m left with pennies in my pocket —
and i could never buy you, no, because I'm
just a cheap paperback on this shelf
while you’re a tome gilded in gold edges.

oh, you looked for me
in all the wrong places
again and again and again
as if you had any right to do so
because you’d left me on the vine before.

oh, you were just another disappointment
to be sure, to be sure, to be sure
because you loved the attention
so much more than you ever loved me
because goddamn you never said the words.

oh, you think it’s so simple
standing far away and pining
when you never wanted me, not really,
because poems were never your thing at all
and you just rolled your eyes when i sent them your way.
