Jemma didn’t know when she had first fallen for Adrian. It didn’t come like a rush, that was for sure, but she noticed him at art school across the quad whenever he was talking shit with his friends. That was when it first started, really.

Soon she was following him with her eyes as if she were a moth and he were a soft flame acting as a silent beacon.

The only one she told in soft tones was her friend Laini, a business major whose whole head was caught up in the nature of the corporate world. In fact, someone like Laini would have been perfect for a guy like Adrian. She was polished, collected, and just the right amount of introverted without being a pushover. She was everything Jemma wanted to be.

“But he has a girlfriend,” Jemma sighed out one day over coffee, her eyes skating to the settings outside the cafe where they sat. A couple walked by, leash for a white Husky in hand, and a feeling of sadness welled up within her as if she suddenly couldn’t watch couples without wanting to break down crying.

It had been like this for months. A year, in fact. It was maddening.

“You need to let him go then,” Laini said, matter-of-fact, sipping at her tea. “I mean, if he’s not going to break up with Nila, what’s the point?”
