I would never be able to get her face out of my head, would I?
The princess was a passing summer fascination — or so I told myself. It was easier that way, to think of her as if she would be a passing breeze or something gone by dusk’s whims. I would never say I loved her — it was a weakness, a mistake — but she sat in place within my mind as if she would never leave.
I thought it might be better if she were a ghost. Then she might move on.
I was so tired of being haunted.
