Rissa knew the costs before she sold her soul to the devil.

“They’ll just burn me like a witch if I stay here,” she told him after he asked why she had summoned him.

“Don’t burn like a witch then. Burn like a firebird.”

Her eyes narrowed. “How?”

A feral smile came to his lips. “You have much to learn. It would be a shame to see you sputter out.”

“So you’ll help me?”

“Help? You’re doing me a favor. I was so bored.”

Rissa didn’t know if to believe him, but she followed anyway. What choice did she have?

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
