A Desk Job Has Finally Enlightened Me About Modern Education
I must have been living with blinders all this time.
My continuing adventures with the workplace are really opening my eyes about how education and career-driven spaces intertwine.
I’m over six weeks into my new job, and I must admit that this position I have is much more a “real job” than anything else I’ve ever experienced thus far in my working life.
What does that mean? Well, let me explain.
Most of my job involves my supervisor giving me a list of tasks to do, and then it’s my responsibility to make sure those things get done in a timely fashion. Sounds simple enough, right? But something was familiar about this whole thing…
Oddly, I’ve been reminded of homework and class projects. The familiarity of it makes me wonder why people act as though school (particularly college) and the workplace are so different. (And why do so many job postings require such a hefty amount of experience in the workplace if school is part of the training phase?) It’s basically all about diligence and time management, two elements that are pretty much mandatory for a successful stint in the realm of education.
My entire college experience, in retrospect, feels like conditioning for this environment…
