10 Things I Hate: Writer’s Edition
You didn’t think I’d start out with the good things, did you?
A few weeks back, I saw a challenge about “10 Things You Hate and 10 Things You Love” — though, of course, I knew I wouldn’t be able to compile a satisfactory list that didn’t become some kind of whine/rave fest.
But what about ten things I hate and ten things I love about writing?
Now there was an idea.
And so here is the “10 Things I Hate” iteration of the challenge — writer’s edition.
Getting started
I always hate those first few moments/minutes with a blank page. I’m pretty sure every writer can relate to this in some way. For a lot of us, that first blank page is not filled with wonder and possibility. It’s daunting, as simple as that, like being held at sword-point.
And it never gets easier (at least not for me). To combat this, I try to jot down some keywords of what I’d like to focus on or include in what I’m writing.
Outlining would also help, but…well, we’ll get to that.
Editing
I’m going to be honest, as much as you may hate me for it: I usually jot out a first draft and then just scan through for typos as well as places I can…
